Taiwan to acquire more than 2,000 ALTIUS drones from Anduril

Taiwan has signed an approximately $847 million contract for 1,554 ALTIUS-700M loitering munitions and 478 ALTIUS-600ISR reconnaissance drones, together with launch equipment and associated systems. Deliveries are expected to begin this year and continue through 2033, substantially expanding Taiwan’s inventory of attritable unmanned systems.

💡 Drone Watcher Insight

The scale of the order is more important than the individual platform. Taiwan is moving toward a force structure built around large inventories of relatively affordable reconnaissance and strike drones capable of dispersal and rapid deployment. The mix of ISR and loitering-munition variants also suggests an integrated sensor-to-shooter concept rather than a simple weapons purchase. For Anduril, the contract further establishes ALTIUS as a major exportable family of systems and gives the company a strategically important foothold in the Indo-Pacific.

Ukraine’s first domestically developed jet-powered interceptor enters service

Ukraine’s Defence Forces have introduced the Alexa Spatium, the country’s first domestically developed jet-powered drone interceptor. Designed primarily against Russian Geran and Shahed-type attack drones, the compact system uses a turbojet engine, television and infrared targeting systems and can carry several warhead types. If it does not engage a target, the aircraft can potentially return for reuse.

💡 Drone Watcher Insight

Jet-powered interceptors represent the next stage of the rapidly evolving drone-versus-drone air-defence market. Propeller-driven interceptors have already demonstrated their usefulness against Shaheds, but faster Russian variants are creating a requirement for considerably greater speed and altitude. Ukraine is effectively developing a new layer between inexpensive FPV-style interceptors and conventional surface-to-air missiles. If systems such as Alexa Spatium can remain substantially cheaper than missiles while achieving reliable interception rates, they could become an important part of future layered air-defence architectures.

Ukraine unveils MAGURA MV11 naval drone mothership

Ukraine has revealed the MAGURA MV11, the largest member of its combat-proven MAGURA unmanned surface vessel family. Designed for multi-day open-ocean operations, the MV11 can carry up to roughly 2,200 kilograms of payload and has been displayed carrying 18 Sting interceptor drones, effectively turning the vessel into a mobile maritime counter-UAS battery.

💡 Drone Watcher Insight

The MV11 illustrates the transition from single-purpose kamikaze USVs toward modular unmanned naval platforms able to perform air defence, reconnaissance, communications relay and potentially strike missions. More importantly, it demonstrates the emergence of unmanned mothership concepts, where one autonomous platform deploys other unmanned systems. This substantially expands the operational reach of comparatively small drones and could allow future fleets to distribute sensors and weapons without exposing crewed ships. The concept is likely to attract considerable attention from navies examining low-cost distributed maritime operations.

US military uses high-energy laser to destroy three hostile drones

US forces operating along the southern border used the Army Multipurpose High Energy Laser (AMP-HEL) to engage and destroy three hostile drones during operations on 25–26 August. US Northern Command said the aircraft were linked to activities posing a physical threat to US military personnel and Customs and Border Protection personnel.

💡 Drone Watcher Insight

The significance is the transition of directed-energy counter-UAS technology from controlled demonstrations toward real operational engagements. Lasers offer an extremely attractive cost-per-shot and theoretically deep magazine compared with missile interceptors, particularly against small drones. Their limitations—weather, line of sight, range and power generation—mean they will not replace conventional weapons, but successful operational use strengthens the case for deploying them as one component of layered C-UAS networks. It also provides manufacturers with something increasingly valuable in the market: combat-relevant operational validation.

Patria partners with Ukrainian drone manufacturer General Cherry

Finnish defence group Patria and Ukrainian manufacturer General Cherry have agreed to cooperate on the production of Ukrainian unmanned systems in Finland. The partnership brings together Ukrainian battlefield-developed drone technology and an established European defence manufacturer, while also expanding General Cherry’s production footprint outside Ukraine.

💡 Drone Watcher Insight

This follows an increasingly visible model in the European drone industry: Ukrainian manufacturers provide systems developed through extremely rapid battlefield iteration, while established European companies contribute production capacity, supply chains, certification and access to NATO customers. If these partnerships continue multiplying, Ukraine may emerge not only as Europe’s largest source of operational drone expertise but as an important technology base for the broader European defence industry. For traditional manufacturers, partnerships may also prove considerably faster than developing equivalent systems internally.
